His own player career started at Moscow Krilya Sovyetov, where he guarded the net in the 1990s. In a way his father’s successor who trained many famous Soviet and Russian goalies, including Vladislav Tretyak, Evgeniy has worked as a goaltending coach at Dynamo (Moscow), Atlant (Mytischi) and Women's Junior (U-18) Team. 

He has also done a lot of scouting work during the 18 years he spent with the NHL Chicago Blackhawks and then with Detroit Red Wings, where he won two Stanley Cups in 2002 and 2008. 

Evgeniy has also been a member of the NHL Central Scouting Bureau since 2010.
